The deadlift is one of the most powerful movements you can add to your training routine. It builds total-body strength, targets major muscle groups, and forms the foundation of raw, functional power. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, understanding the basics is essential for both performance and safety.
How to Deadlift Properly
Start by positioning your feet about hip-width apart with the barbell over the middle of your feet. Your shins should be close to the bar without pushing it forward. Hinge at your hips and bend your knees just enough to grip the bar slightly outside your legs.
Keep your chest up, shoulders pulled back, and your spine neutral—this is key. Engage your core before lifting to protect your lower back. As you begin the lift, push through your heels and extend your hips and knees at the same time. The bar should travel in a straight line, staying close to your body throughout the movement.
At the top, stand tall without leaning back excessively. Squeeze your glutes, then reverse the movement by hinging at your hips first, guiding the bar back down under control.
Consistency and proper form will always beat lifting heavier with poor technique. Focus on mastering the movement, and the strength will follow. Train with intention, lift with power, and represent raw strength every time you step up to the bar.
